환자 보호자와의 대화

Talking with families is often the hardest part of the job. Yesterday I had to break the news to a patient's daughter that her father's condition had gotten worse overnight. She was clearly struggling to come to terms with it, so I sat with her for a while and answered every question she had. I told her that even though the next few days would be difficult, we would be there for her every step of the way. She asked whether he was likely to pull through, and I explained honestly that it was still too early to tell. Before she left, she thanked me and said that just having someone hang in there with her made things feel a little less overwhelming.

가족들과 이야기하는 건 이 일에서 가장 힘든 부분일 때가 많아요. 어제는 한 환자의 딸에게 아버지의 상태가 밤새 나빠졌다는 소식을 전해야 했어요. 그녀가 그걸 받아들이기 힘들어하는 게 분명히 보여서, 한동안 곁에 앉아 그녀의 모든 질문에 답해드렸어요. 앞으로 며칠이 힘들겠지만 저희가 매 순간 함께할 거라고 말씀드렸어요. 그녀는 아버지가 이겨낼 가능성이 있는지 물었고, 저는 아직 판단하기엔 너무 이르다고 솔직하게 설명드렸어요. 떠나기 전 그녀는 감사 인사를 전하며, 누군가 곁에서 함께 버텨준다는 것만으로도 상황이 조금은 덜 압도적으로 느껴졌다고 말했어요.
