A new patient came in today who seemed really nervous, so I spent the first few minutes just trying to break the ice before getting into the actual exam. I asked about her weekend, and once she realized I wasn't in a rush, she started to open up a lot more about what was actually bothering her. Small talk like that really helps put patients at ease, especially the ones who are anxious about being at a clinic in the first place. By the end of the visit, she seemed to have warmed up to me quite a bit, which made the whole conversation easier. It's funny how sometimes you just hit it off with a patient right away, and other times it takes a few visits to get there.
